Rewards keep coming towards the Indian Women's team, a month since their historic World Cup win at the D.Y. Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, as the government of Maharashtra has announced Rs. 11 lakh (INR) each to the complete support staff for their behind the scenes contribution in India achieving the feat.
The Maharashtra government had previously also rewarded the players, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav with Rs. 2.25 crore (INR) for their on-field contributions, and Rs. 22.5 lakh (INR) to coach Amol Muzumdar, while the trio, coach and the staff also met the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CMs Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde after the victory.
Several other star players from other states have also been promised various cash prizes, jobs and even lands by the respective state government for etching their names in history.
Watershed moment in Indian sports
The 2025 home World Cup final was India's third appearance in the final, after suffering defeats in 2005 and another one, with an agonising margin in 2017. The huge crowd turn-outs and people wearing Smriti's and Harmanpreet Kaur's jerseys are widely considered as a watershed moment in Indian sports, not just cricket, much like the World Cup 1983.
It is expected to bring a change for women's sports, with many more girls likely to take sports as a serious career option, with considerably higher support from their parents and ecosystem.
On the final, started off by Shafali Verma's 87-run knock in the final, alongside Deepti Sharma's 58, India posted a target of 299 in the final, which they defended in style, again, thanks to the aforementioned duo. Shafali picked two crucial wickets, while Deepti scalped a five-fer, as India lifted their first ICC Women's title.
The team and support staff were later also invited to the Prime Minister's residence, followed by a meeting with the President, before they finally headed home to grand welcomes.
