Biggest defeats for SRH in IPL in terms of runs [Source: @SunRisers/x]
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), fondly known as the 'Orange Army,' boasts a rich history in the IPL, marked by consistent performances and a triumphant title run in 2016. However, even a franchise of their stature has endured its fair share of humbling defeats over the years.
After SRH’s huge defeat against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the earlier days of the IPL 2025 season, here is a look at the five biggest margin of defeats (in terms of runs) recorded by the much-celebrated franchise in the history of the tournament.
5. 72 runs vs RR, Hyderabad 2023
In match number four of the IPL 2023 season against Rajasthan Royals, hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad slipped to a 72-run defeat at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. For the Royals, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler and captain Sanju Samson belted identical half-centuries to catapult themselves to 203-5 from 20 overs upfront.
In response, the SRH managed to accrue just 131-8, with Abdul Samad’s mere run-a-ball 32-run effort turning out to be the biggest benefactor of the innings. Under the leadership of fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the defeat also signalled SRH’s misery that season, where they went on to secure the undesirable ‘wooden-spooners’ tag.
4. 72 runs vs PBKS, Sharjah 2014
During the earlier stages of the IPL 2014 season, Punjab Kings ravaged SRH by 72 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Glenn Maxwell muscled 95 runs off just 43 balls for the PBKS, launching five boundaries and nine huge sixes against the likes of SRH’s Dale Steyn, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Irfan Pathan and Amit Mishra.
Chasing a steep 194-run target, SRH bundled out for just 121 in 19.2 overs to a scintillating four-wicket haul from Lakshmipathy Balaji. Apart from KL Rahul (27), no other batter managed to cross the 20-run mark for the Shikhar Dhawan-led side.
3. 77 runs vs CSK, Hyderabad 2013
CSK legend Suresh Raina blew away SRH’s experienced bowling attack of Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra by smearing 99 unbeaten runs from just 52 balls in match 54 of the IPL 2013 season at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Raina’s blitzkrieg, coupled with Michael Hussey’s divine 42-ball 67 lifted CSK to 223-3 from 20 overs upfront.
In response, hosts SRH listed just 146-8 by the completion of their innings. Captain Kumar Sangakkara failed to get going in the run-chase, while opening batter Parthiv Patel top-scored with his 30-ball 44. SRH fell to a 77-run drubbing in the game, enduring a late threat to their playoff ambitions.
2. 78 runs vs CSK, Chennai 2024
Pat Cummins-led SRH troops were left shellshocked by Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk Stadium back in April 2024 during the middle stages of the IPL 2024 season. Winning the toss and opting to field first, SRH bowlers conceded a monumental 212-run total to the hosts.
Chasing 213, SRH lost three huge wickets inside the opening powerplay itself. Aiden Markram counterattacked CSK bowlers for a while in his 26-ball 32, before an eventual batting collapse induced by Tushar Deshpande’s four-wicket haul enveloped the entire SRH innings for just 134 in 18.5 overs. Despite falling 78 runs short of their target, Cummins and co. managed to sneak in a spot in the playoffs.
1. 80 runs vs KKR, Kolkata 2025
In match 15 of the IPL 2025 season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, hosts KKR walloped the visiting SRH group by 80 runs after losing the toss. Despite having the defending champions on the mat at 16-2 early in the game, the hosts mounted 200-6 from 20 overs courtesy of splendid half-centuries from Venkatesh Iyer and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
In response, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan all fell with single-digits to their name before the ‘Orange Army’ was bundled out for just 120 in 16.4 overs. For the KKR, Vaibhav Arora and Varun Chakravarthy induced the most damage by picking up three wickets each.
