Today, the cricketing world is celebrating the 16th anniversary of Virat Kohli's maiden international appearance. On August 18, 2008, the talismanic cricketer made his debut in a One-Day International match between India and Sri Lanka at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

Although Kohli had a forgettable debut, being dismissed for just 12 runs off Nuwan Kulasekara's bowling, he eventually lived up to his potential, establishing himself as the backbone of the Indian batting unit.

His meteoric rise in international cricket earned him massive applause from fans and experts, prompting them to compare him with Sachin Tendulkar, the God of Cricket.

Despite his constant comparison with the batting stalwart, Kohli has always admitted to being one of his disciples. However, interestingly, he is ahead of Tendulkar in several batting records, as mentioned below.

5. Most hundreds in ODI cricket

For a long time, Tendulkar held the record for the most hundreds in One-Day Internationals. However, Kohli finally surpassed his idol when he slammed a scintillating ton in the all-important semifinal of the ICC World Cup in India last year.

His valiant century powered India to the final of the competition, which they lost to a rampant Australian side in Ahmedabad.

4. Fastest batter to score 10000 ODI runs

Virat Kohli is the quickest batter to complete 10000 runs in One-Day Internationals. Notably, Tendulkar was the first-ever cricketer to breach the 10000-run mark in ODIs. He took 259 innings to achieve the milestone.

However, Kohli bettered his record, as he attained the phenomenal feat in only 205 innings during a game against West Indies in Visakhapatnam.

3. Most ODI hundreds in run-chases

Regarded as the chase master, Virat Kohli always elevates his game during run chases. Overall, he is India's second most prolific performer after Tendulkar while batting second.

However, he has 27 ODI centuries, ten more than Tendulkar, who has 17 tons to his name while chasing.

2. Most runs in a year for India

Virat Kohli possesses the prestigious record for the highest runs in a calendar year for Team India. He tallied 2818 runs in just 58 innings across formats in 2017.

This is the most runs by an Indian in international cricket. He is also the second-best for India with 2735 runs, which he scored the next year.

Meanwhile, Tendulkar has 2541 runs as his most-ever in a year, which he garnered way back in 1998.

1.Most runs in a single World Cup edition

Just like most ODI centuries, Kohli also broke Tendulkar's record to become the highest run-getter in a single World Cup edition.

The Delhi-born batter aggregated 765 runs in the 2023 World Cup, surpassing the Master Blaster's tally of 673 runs that he scored in the 2003 edition of the tournament.
