Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah recently claimed that bowlers make great captains, and cited the examples of Pat Cummins and three former Pakistani cricketers to support his argument. Bumrah, currently enjoying a rare break from international cricket, recently starred in India’s triumphant run in West Indies during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Apart from Cummins and three former Pakistan captains, the Indian speedster also cited the example of legendary fast bowler and ex-skipper Kapil Dev.

Jasprit Bumrah argues why bowlers become great captains

While speaking with the Indian Express, Team India speedster Jasprit Bumrah explained how bowlers tend to become successful captains for their respective teams. He cited the examples of three World Cup winning captains in the form of Australia’s Pat Cummins, India’s Kapil Dev and Pakistan’s Imran Khan.

Moreover, Bumrah also stated that he used to watch former fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis leading the Pakistan cricket team. He said:

“We’ve seen Pat Cummins doing really well. When I was a child, I’d seen Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis as captains. Kapil Dev has won us a World Cup. Imran Khan has won a World Cup for Pakistan. So, bowlers are the smart ones.”

Jasprit Bumrah further claimed that bowlers are “smart people” because they need to figure out how to get the batters out. He added that bowlers do not get “hide” behind a flat wicket and are often blamed when the team loses. He added”

“I feel bowlers are smart people because they have to get the batsmen out. Bowlers have to do the hard job and are not hiding behind a bat, they’re not hiding behind a flat wicket. We’re right in the firing line. When we lose a game, it’s usually the bowlers who are blamed. So it’s a hard job.”

Jasprit Bumrah himself briefly led the Indian cricket team for a Test match in England back in 2022. As of now, he will soon be seen gracing the Indian colours once again for the upcoming two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.
