Pulling off a successful run-chase in a Test in Pakistan, or in any Test matches for that matter, requires much composure, endurance and the hunger for grinding out long hours at the crease. Throughout history, certain visiting teams have indeed recorded remarkable run-chases in Pakistan against the hosts.

Here at OneCricket, we take a look at five of the highest successful run-chases registered by visiting teams against Pakistan in Pakistan.

Highest successful targets chased down by visiting sides in Pakistan:

4. 176 by England, Karachi 2000

Pakistan and England locked horns in Karachi back in December 2000 for the series-deciding third Test match after two drawn fixtures. At the halfway stage of the match, hosts Pakistan gained a handy 17-run lead courtesy of Inzamam-ul-Haq’s 142 and Waqar Younis’ four-fer. Later, England bowlers Darren Gough and Ashley Giles restricted Pakistan to just 158 in the second innings to set up a 176-run target for the visitors.

The English chase began with the early exits of both openers Mike Atherton and Marcus Trescothick to Saqlain Mushtaq. Alec Stewart also made his way back to the crease as England crashed to 65-3 at one stage. Fortunately for the visitors, Graham Thorpe (64*) and Graeme Hick (40) orchestrated a series-winning six-wicket win for them at the National Stadium.

3. 185 by Bangladesh, Rawalpindi 2024

In September 2024 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the Bangladesh cricket team scripted history by recording their first-ever series win in Pakistan. They did so by overhauling their target of 185 in the second Test on a tough Day 5 surface courtesy of contributions from each of their top six batters. Earlier in the match, Bangladesh bowlers skittled Pakistan for scores of 274 and 172 across both innings, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud hogging the limelight with the ball by registering remarkable five-wicket hauls.

However, it was a cracking century from Litton Das in the first Bangladesh innings that made the difference as it minimised Pakistan’s halfway advantage to just 12 runs.

208 by England, Lahore 1961

During England’s 1961 tour of Pakistan for a three-match Test series, the visitors conquered the series opener at Lahore by a five-wicket margin. Being tasked to chase 208 runs, Edward Dexter top-scored with a composed 66* to steer his team to a 1-0 lead in the series. Earlier in the match, Pakistan gained a seven-run first innings lead after restricting the visitors to just 380 in response to a 387-9d recorded by the hosts on Day 2.

Javed Burki plundered a majestic 138 for Pakistan in the first innings while England’s Ken Barrington responded with an identical 139. England’s fast bowler and debutant Alan Brown picked up three wickets in the second innings to dismantle the hosts for just 200, thus setting up a 208-run target and a series win for themselves.

1. 220 by Sri Lanka, Rawalpindi 2000

Pakistan and Sri Lanka played out a nail-biter at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium back in February 2000 during the first Test of a three-match series between the two Asian giants. After Pramodya Wickramasinghe picked up figures of 4-37 to fold up Pakistan for just 182, legendary Aravinda de Silva carved 112 as Sri Lanka mounted a colossal 171-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.

For Pakistan, charismatic Younis Khan charted a fighting 107 in the second innings as Pakistan listed 390 to set Sri Lanka a challenging target of 220. The visitors did succeed in their pursuit, but at the expense of 83.5 overs and the fall of eight wickets. Legendary southpaw Sanath Jayasuriya played starring role in the run-chase by smacking a scintillating 56.
