A deadly spin exponent, a gun fielder, and a belligerent lower-order batter; Ravindra Jadeja ticks all the boxes that epitomizes a quintessential modern-day all-rounder. While the cricketer’s primary strength lies in his left-arm orthodox spin bowling, there was once a time when he desired to become a fast bowler instead.

Currently on the verge of completing 300 Test wickets, here at OneCricket, we look back at a time when Ravindra Jadeja had expressed his love of being a fast bowler who had to give up on his longing childhood dream because of lack of speed.

When Ravindra Jadeja expressed his love for pace

Legendary spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja once said that the wanted to become a fast bowler because he enjoyed the sight of other speedsters sending down bouncers towards their opponents.

The cricketer revealed that he also wanted to bowl bouncers, but had to give up on his ambition of becoming a fast bowler because he did have the speed of becoming one. While speaking with Star Sports back in March 2023, he said:

“When I started playing cricket long back, I used to love being a fast bowler. I used to love seeing other fast bowlers bowling bouncers. Watching them, even I used to think that I would also bowl bouncers to batters, but I didn’t have the speed to be a fast bowler.”

Ravindra Jadeja made his Team India debut in February 2009 through white-ball games in Sri Lanka; and has so far represented his country 69 times in Tests, and 263 times in ODIs and T20Is combined.

He is currently sitting on a pile of 551 international wickets across all formats, which includes a staggering tally of 278 Test scalps from just 99 innings.

Through his all-round craft, Ravindra Jadeja was also a crucial member of India’s 2013 Champions Trophy triumph in England.
