Suryakumar Yadav ‘bowled’ his way to a remarkable victory for Team India over Sri Lanka in the third T20I of his maiden captaincy assignment. Known for his swashbuckling batting dynamics, the cricketer handed himself the ball for the final over of the match, at a time when Sri Lanka required just six runs from the remaining six deliveries.

As it turned out, Suryakumar came up clutch with the ball by dismissing Kamindu Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana in successive deliveries to enforce a dramatic super-over. A while later, Team India won the resultant tie-breaker with both their wickets intact.

While Suryakumar Yadav’s pyrotechnics with the ball came in handy for the ‘Men in Blue’, the cricketer was once booked by the BCCI for having a suspect bowling action during his KKR playing days.

When Suryakumar Yadav was reported for illegal action

Nearly a decade before Suryakumar Yadav helped India strangle Sri Lanka in Pallekele for a 3-0 series win, the cricketer was reported for holding a suspect bowling action by the BCCI. While playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in a 2014 Champions League T20 final against CSK, Suryakumar sent down a couple of overs from his part-time spin repertoire to the likes of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni.

However, on-field umpires Rod Tucker and Kumar Dharmasena as well as third umpire S Ravi felt that there was a flex action in Suryakumar’s elbow beyond the acceptable limit. He was subsequently placed on the ‘warning list’ by the match officials.

Regardless, Suryakumar Yadav went on to debut for Team India in March 2021, albeit as a pure batter. So far, the cricketer has represented his nation in a Test, 37 ODIs and 71 T20Is. In July 2024, he became a part of the victorious Indian unit at the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies.
