On November 28 back in 2022, Maharashtra’s batting stalwart Ruturaj Gaikwad created history by becoming the first batter to hit seven sixes in an over of List A cricket. Leading his side in the second quarter-final of the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy against Uttar Pradesh, the cricketer took left-arm spinner Shiva Singh to the cleaners at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium B Ground in Ahmedabad.

Gaikwad accumulated 43 runs, including 42 off the bat, from a single over to catapult himself from 165* to 207* in a space of just six legal deliveries.

Throwback to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s belligerent hitting

Maharashtra captain and opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad, after being put into bat first, tore apart Uttar Pradesh bowlers in their high-octane quarter-final clash of the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The right-handed opener raced to 165* from just 147 balls by the conclusion of the 48th over of the Maharashtra innings.

Facing Shiva Singh in the team’s penultimate over, the cricketer blasted six sixes across six legal deliveries, and an additional hit off a no-ball to accumulate 43 runs. Gaikwad himself raced to 207* to register his maiden List A double ton, and eventually finished his innings at a career-best 220* from just 159 balls.

Ruturaj Gaikwad listed 10 boundaries and 16 sixes in his 159-ball epic, and orchestrated Maharashtra’s colossal score of 330-5 from their 50 overs.

The total turned out to be 58 runs better than the best run-chase efforts from Uttar Pradesh, as Maharashtra comfortably entered the next stage of the knockouts.

Apart from showcasing his batting adventures for his state team, Gaikwad is also a prominent member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in IPL under MS Dhoni’s guidance. The youngster was recently retained by the CSK camp for next year’s IPL 2024 season. He first joined the base back during the 2019 edition of the tournament.
