The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 ended with Australia claiming a dominant 3-1 victory over India. The final blow came in the fifth Test at Sydney, where Australia successfully chased down a target of 162 runs with six wickets to spare, ending their 10-year wait to reclaim the prestigious trophy.
India's campaign in the series was challenging, with key performances missing. In the fifth Test, India set Australia a target of 162 runs, but the absence of pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out due to injury, proved costly. Australia capitalized on this opportunity and secured a spot in the ICC World Test Championship final for 2023-25.
Virat Kohli's Struggles with Dismissals
Virat Kohli's form throughout the series was a major concern, as he struggled to find his rhythm and continued to fall victim to deliveries just outside the off-stump. This recurring flaw was evident throughout the series, as he failed to rectify it.
IND VS AUS 1st Test
In the first Test, Kohli's dismissal came early, when he was out for just 5 runs off 12 balls. Josh Hazlewood bowled a sharp delivery that climbed and found the outside edge of Kohli’s bat. The ball went straight to Usman Khawaja at first slip, and Kohli was sent packing.
Kohli made a fantastic comeback, scoring an unbeaten 100 off 143 balls, showcasing his true form. India dominated the match, winning by 295 runs.
IND VS AUS 2nd Test
Kohli had a disappointing outing in the second innings of the 2nd Test at Adelaide Oval. He faced Mitchell Starc, who bowled a full-pitched delivery. Kohli attempted to block it but misjudged and ended up poking at it. Steve Smith caught the outside edge in slips, and Kohli walked off with just 7 runs off 8 balls.
In the second innings of this Test, Kohli fell for 11 runs off 21 balls when a length delivery from Scott Boland found his edge. Alex Carey took the catch behind the stumps, once again exposing Kohli’s weakness with deliveries outside the off-stump.
IND VS AUS 3rd Test
Kohli’s vulnerability continued in the third Test at Gabba. Once again, Hazlewood targeted the line outside off, and Kohli chased a delivery he should have left. He edged it to Alex Carey at slips and was dismissed for just 3 runs. India had already lost other key wickets, and Kohli’s failure proved to be a costly one.
The third Test ended in a draw due to rain, with both sides showing resilience.
IND VS AUS 4th Test
In the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Kohli faced an early dismissal. Australia’s Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul followed soon after. Kohli stepped in but was dismissed for 36 runs off 86 balls by Scott Boland. He edged a delivery outside off to the keeper, and Alex Carey took the catch.
4th Test - Second Innings Kohli fell again after trying to play a cover drive off Mitchell Starc. The ball found the outside edge, and Usman Khawaja took a sharp catch at first slip. Kohli’s dismissal was yet another disappointing moment in the series.
IND VS AUS 5th Test
In the fifth Test, Kohli faced Scott Boland in both innings, and once again, deliveries outside the off-stump were his downfall. In the first innings, Boland pitched a ball just outside off, and Kohli’s attempt to push at it resulted in an edge that Beau Webster caught at slip.
Kohli had a reprieve early in the innings, where an edge was dropped, but his luck ran out again when he was dismissed for just 17 runs. His form remained inconsistent, as he continued to struggle against the outside-off deliveries.
In his final innings of the series, Kohli’s struggles continued. Off a delivery from Scott Boland, he poked at a ball outside the off-stump and was caught in the slips for just 6 runs off 12 balls. This marked his eighth successive dismissal in this series due to deliveries outside the off-stump, a flaw that seemed impossible to fix.
Throughout the series, Kohli's persistent weakness against deliveries outside the off-stump remained a major talking point.
