India head coach Gautam Gambhir made headlines with his remarks about the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Test format. Speaking at a press conference after India’s defeat in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Sydney, Gambhir stressed that the decision regarding their future in Test cricket lies solely with the two experienced players.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended in a 3-1 victory for Australia, saw India struggling throughout the series. The final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground ended on the third day, with Australia clinching a six-wicket win.

Both Kohli and Rohit had a forgettable series. Rohit managed only 31 runs across five innings, while Kohli failed to score a half-century after his impressive unbeaten century in Perth.

When questioned about the future of the senior duo, Gambhir praised both Kohli and Rohit for their dedication and hunger to succeed.

"I can’t talk about the future of any player," Gambhir said during the media interaction.

“They are tough people with hunger. They’ll decide what is best for Indian cricket," Gambhir said.

"It’s up to them. But, yes, what i can say is they still have the hunger, they still have the passion. They are tough people. I hope they will do everything they can to take Indian cricket forward. But, like I said, whatever they do, they will plan for the best interests of Indian cricket," he added.

Rohit Sharma’s Bold Statement

During an interview with Star Sports midway through the final Test, Rohit addressed the speculation around his future. Contrary to retirement rumours, Rohit made it clear that he isn't stepping away from Test cricket anytime soon. He admitted that he opted out of the fifth Test but wasn’t considering retirement.

With India failing to qualify for the World Test Championship final, their next big challenge in the Test format is a five-match series against England in June. This series will be a crucial one for both the selectors and the players. The selectors face a tough task in deciding whether to continue backing veterans like Kohli and Rohit or to make room for younger talent.
