The Indian Cricket Team (ICT) faced a crushing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, losing the series 3-1 to Australia. The final blow came in the fifth Test at Sydney, where Australia chased down a target of 162 runs with six wickets in hand, ending their 10-year wait to reclaim the prestigious trophy.
India’s campaign in the BGT 2024-25 was far from their best. After being bowled out for just 157 runs in their second innings on a seamer-friendly Sydney pitch, the team set a modest target of 162 runs for Australia. Despite early breakthroughs, India couldn’t capitalise, as the absence of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah proved costly. Bumrah, who had been India’s go-to bowler throughout the series, was ruled out of the final innings due to injury concerns, leaving the team’s bowling attack significantly weakened.
Australia, on the other hand, seized the opportunity and chased the target with relative ease. This victory not only handed them BGT but also secured their place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final for the 2023-25 cycle.
Indian cricket fans didn’t hold back their disappointment after the series defeat. Social media was flooded with memes and comments, with many drawing comparisons between ICT and RCB. One user tweeted, “If Bumrah doesn’t exist, ICT is just another RCB.” Another fan wrote, “ICT is dead now. RIP.”
Australia End a Decade-Long Drought
Australia’s victory in the BGT marks a significant milestone for the team. It’s their first series win in India since the 2014-15 season. The Aussies had come close in previous editions but couldn’t get over the line. This time, they made no mistake.
With this win, Australia became the second team to qualify for the WTC final in the ongoing cycle. Their consistent performances throughout the series boosted their points percentage to 63.72, eliminating India from the race for the final. This is the first time in three WTC cycles that India have failed to qualify for the final.
