Indian middle-order batsman, Shreyas Iyer, has undergone a successful back surgery in London on Tuesday, rendering him unavailable for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.

Iyer had recently recovered from a back issue and had made a triumphant comeback in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. However, his joy was short-lived, as he suffered a relapse of his injury.

According to sources, the surgery was performed on Tuesday in London, and the 28-year-old has already started walking around, indicating positive signs of recovery.

“Shreyas underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday in London. In fact, he walked a bit too yesterday,” a source told Times of India.

Reportedly, Iyer is likely to be sidelined for the next three months as he recovers from the surgery. This means that he will miss the IPL 2023 season and the WTC final but he should be available for selection in time for the ODI World Cup later this year, which is a silver lining for the Indian team.

The setback has raised concerns about the batsman's future performances, given his past history with back issues. However, the team management is optimistic about his quick recovery, and the Kolkata Knight Riders’ skipper's return will undoubtedly provide a much-needed boost to the Indian batting lineup, which has been struggling to find stability in the middle-order.

Iyer has been a crucial player for the Indian team, with his impressive performances in limited-overs format. He was the leading run-scorer in ODIs last year. His absence will be felt in the WTC final, as the Indian team looks to clinch their maiden title in the longest format of the game.

The Mumbai based cricketer’s injury comes at a time when Indian cricket is facing a significant injury crisis, with leading pacer Jasprit Bumrah also battling back issues. Bumrah underwent surgery recently and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Despite the setback, Indian cricket fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Iyer, and his return to full fitness will be a significant boost for the team ahead of the ODI World Cup.
