On August 15, the entire nation is celebrating the 79th Independence Day. The fans are filled with patriotism and love for the country. Meanwhile, playing a match on the special day for your nation is a moment of pride for cricketers.
Indian stars were privileged on six occasions as India played a game on Independence Day. However, only once has a cricketer managed to score a century. Notably, Virat Kohli, the white-ball talisman, is the only Indian in the history of cricket to have scored a century on August 15. Let's revisit that heroic knock.
The Day Virat Kohli Immortalised Himself In History Books
The historic feat was scripted during India's tour to the West Indies in 2019. Notably, the Men in Maroon hosted the Men in Blue for the third ODI on August 14 (West Indies time).
The Windies batted first and put 240/7 on the board. Further, rain interruptions resulted in Kohli walking to bat when it was past midnight in India. Virat played a great knock as he amassed an unbeaten 114 (99), which featured fourteen boundaries.
It was an important knock as a defeat for India would have levelled the series 1-1. Further, chasing 241 runs, India were reduced to 92/3 and from there, Virat took the onus on his shoulders and stood there until the end, helping India clinch the all-important series on a foreign soil. Kohli not only scored a hundred, but also kept the scoring rate in check and sealed a win for India with 15 balls in hand and six wickets remaining.
The century- run stand also helped Virat win the player of the series award for scoring 234 runs in three matches.
