In the early hours on Friday, August 15, the thirteenth edition of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) got underway with Antigua & Barbuda Falcons locking horns against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
It was a comfortable night for the Patriots as the Jason Holder-led side registered a six-wicket win. Notably, the Falcons, batting first, put 121 runs on the board. In return, the Patriots chased down the total with 30 balls in hand.
Shakib Kickstarts CPL 2025 With A Shambolic Performance
The shambolic performance put players under the scanner, particularly Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan. The 38-year-old, who is arguably the greatest all-rounder in the history of T20 cricket, had a night to forget both with the bat and the ball.
Shakib walked to bat when the Falcons were reduced to 65/4. It was a crucial moment in the match, but the former Bangladesh skipper failed to get going, scoring only 11 (16) and failing to hit a single boundary.
The 38-year-old had the chance to redeem himself with the ball, but failed to get that opportunity as the skipper only trusted him with a solitary over, in which Shakib gave away six runs without a solitary wicket.
Holder trusted his countryman, Rahkeem Cornwall, over Bangladesh legend as the primary spinner in the opening game of CPL 2025. Notably, Cornwall didn't disappoint and picked up two wickets in three overs, giving away 19 runs.
Shakib Struggling With Form Across Leagues
Shakib has made a name for himself by playing across leagues around the world. Prior to CPL, Shakib featured in Max 60 2025; he picked up 52 runs in five innings.
Further, Shakib's bat didn't do well as he amassed 72 runs in four innings. Further, with the ball, he picked up five wickets in four innings and produced the same result in GSL 2025.
