The year 2025 will be remembered as one of the most defining years in Virat Kohli’s legendary career. While it began with tough questions around his future in Test cricket, it ended with silverware and record-breaking performances

At the age of 37, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025. The Indian legend played 123 Tests for India and made 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. However, Kohli’s story in 2025 was far from over. 

Shifting focus to ODIs and T20I cricket, the Indian great rolled back the years, producing one of the finest limited-overs seasons of his career. 

From dominating the Champions Trophy to finally winning the IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli ended the year on a historic high. Having said this, in this article, let's take a look at all the records broken by Virat Kohli in 2025.

Virat Kohli's individual milestones

One of the biggest highlights of 2025 was Kohli becoming the fastest batter to reach 14,000 ODI runs. He achieved the landmark in just 287 innings during the Champions Trophy match against Pakistan in Dubai. 

Only Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara had previously crossed the mark, but both took far more innings than Kohli.

In the 2025, Virat Kohli also:

  • The fastest to score 82, 83, and 84 international centuries 
  • First player to score 51, 52, and 53 ODI centuries.
  • He became the second-leading run-scorer in ODI history. The stylish batter has 14,557 runs in 308 matches at an average of 58.46 and a strike-rate of 93.65. The most runs in ODI history belong to Sachin Tendulkar (18426 runs).
  • Kohli became the third-highest run-scorer in international cricket (27,975 runs). The most runs in a career (Tests+ODIs+T20Is) is that of Sachin Tendulkar (34357 runs).
  • Finished as the top scorer in limited-overs cricket (ODIs and T20Is combined).

Kohli’s consistency was unmatched, as he also recorded:

  • The most 50+ scores in home ODIs (61)
  • The most 50+ scores in ODI chases (71)
  • The fastest to complete 8,000 ODI runs in chases
  • The fastest to complete 12,000 ODI runs at No.3

Virat Kohli's trophy milestones

  • Virat Kohli won the ICC Champions Trophy with India in 2025
  • He became the Indian player with the most ICC ODI trophies (3). It is important to note that Ricky Ponting leads the list with a total of five ICC trophies.
  • He is now the joint-most ICC trophy winner for India (4 overall).  He has been part of victorious teams in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, ICC Champions Trophy 2013, ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

He also set records in ICC events:

  • First player to score 1,000 runs in ICC knockout matches
  • First player to score 10 fifty-plus scores in ICC knockouts
  • Most 50+ scores in ICC ODIs (24)
  • Most runs in ICC ODI chases (1,308)
  • Most 50+ scores in Champions Trophy history (7), joining cricket greats like Shikhar Dhawan, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid.
  • At 36 years and 110 days, Kohli also became the oldest player to score a century in Champions Trophy history.

Virat Kohli continued to dominate certain teams and conditions in 2025, especially under pressure.

  • Most runs against a single team in ICC tournaments (745 vs Pakistan)
  • Most Man of the Match awards against one team in ICC events (5 vs Pakistan)
  • Only player to score centuries against Pakistan in both World Cups and Champions Trophy
  • First player to win Man of the Match against Pakistan in all ICC tournaments
  • Most runs vs South Africa in a 3-match ODI series (302)

He also became:

  • The first Indian to score 1,000 ODI runs vs South Africa in winning matches
  • The player with the most runs vs SENA teams in ODI wins
  • The batter with the most centuries vs SENA teams in international wins

Kohli's fielding records

Kohli’s contribution was not limited to batting alone. His athleticism helped him achieve:

  • Most catches by an Indian fielder in ODIs (167). He broke the record of Mohammad Azharuddin, 156 catches in 334 matches.
  • Most catches by an Indian fielder in international cricket (342). Virat Kohli broke the record of Rahul Dravid (333).
  • Most catches by a fielder vs Australia in Australia (38).

Virat Kohli's historic records in IPL 2025

First Batter to Score 1,000 Runs Against Four IPL Teams

Virat Kohli created history in RCB’s opening match against the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025. During that game, he completed 1,000 IPL runs against KKR, becoming the first batter ever to score 1,000 runs against four different IPL teams, which include Delhi Capitals, CSK, and Punjab Kings.

Leading run-scorer against CSK and GT

Virat Kohli has always enjoyed playing against CSK, and IPL 2025 made that dominance official. He overtook Shikhar Dhawan to become the highest run-scorer against CSK in IPL history, with 1,084 runs. Kohli also surpassed Ruturaj Gaikwad to become the leading run-scorer against the Gujarat Titans, with 351 runs.

First player to hit 1,000 boundaries in IPL history

Another major milestone came when Kohli became the first batter in IPL history to hit 1,000 boundaries, combining both fours and sixes.

Most 50-Plus scores in IPL history

Before IPL 2025, David Warner held the record for the most fifty-plus scores in the league. Kohli overtook him during RCB’s match against Punjab Kings when he brought up his 67th fifty-plus score. By the end of the season, Kohli had 71 fifty-plus scores, the most by any player in IPL history. 

100 or more boundaries against 7 IPL teams

Virat Kohli also became the first batter to hit 100 or more boundaries against seven different IPL teams. The teams include CSK, DC, PBKS, KKR, MI, RR, and SRH.

Record-breaking dominance vs CSK at Bengaluru

Virat Kohli produced some of his most memorable performances against Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, breaking multiple records:

  • First batter to score 500+ runs in eight different IPL seasons
  • First batter to hit 150 sixes for one team at a single venue (RCB at Chinnaswamy Stadium)
  • Most runs against a single opponent in IPL history (1,146 runs vs CSK)

First Batter with 500+ Runs in Eight IPL Seasons

The RCB legend crossed 600 runs in IPL 2025, marking the eighth time he scored over 500 runs in a single season. He also became the first batter to register eight or more fifty-plus scores in three different IPL seasons:

  • 2016 - 11 fifty-plus scores (7 fifties, 4 centuries)
  • 2023 - 8 fifty-plus scores (6 fifties, 2 centuries)
  • 2025 - 8 fifty-plus scores

Previously, David Warner had achieved this feat only twice.

Most Fours in IPL History

In the IPL 2025 final against the Punjab Kings, Kohli surpassed Shikhar Dhawan to become the leading four-hitter in IPL history. The star batter struck three fours in the final and finished the season with 771 fours.
