The eventful 2025 ODI calendar has concluded, with the end of South Africa's tour of India, where the hosts asserted dominance in their 2-1 series win, where stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were among the runs, as usual, to set their team up for wins. On the other side of the world, New Zealand defeated the West Indies 2-0 in a three-match series, with star bowler Matt Henry picking up a Player of the Match award.

As we inch closer to 2026, when T20I cricket will take over some prominence in the early months ahead of the T20 World Cup, here's a brief look at the ODI Team of the Year 2025 by OneCricket.

Top-order batters

1. Rohit Sharma (c)

The ICC Champions Trophy-winning captain, who is also the leading run-scoring opener in ODIs among the full member nations, is the first name on the sheet. Rohit started the year with a trophy and a century in Cuttack and returned to action late in October to score another century in a successful chase at the SCG to prove that age is just a number.

He finishes the year with 650 runs in 14 innings, averaging 50 at a strike rate of 100.46. He scored two centuries and four fifties in 2025.

2. Rachin Ravindra

The New Zealand opening batter, who can also bat lower down the order, was the highest run-scorer in his team's run to the Champions Trophy final, accumulating 263 runs at an average of 65.75 in 4 matches. In 14 innings of 2025, he scored a century each against Bangladesh and South Africa — both in Pakistan. He got 604 runs at an average of 43.14 and a strike rate of 106.90, while scoring three more fifties.

3. Virat Kohli

Just like the several previous years, Virat Kohli remains a constant at 3 in the ODI Team of the Year, for his 651 runs in 13 innings at an average of 65.10, scoring three centuries, including one against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy and two back-to-back against South Africa at the end of the year. He was instrumental in India lifting the aforementioned ICC event, and despite scoring a couple of ducks, he managed healthy numbers in the year.

Honourable mentions: George Munsey (735 runs).

Middle-order batters

4. Joe Root

Although it is a spot below his preferred batting position, it is impossible not include the most in-form international batter and the leading ODI run-scorer of 2025 in this line-up. Despite the English side not doing anything noteworthy in ODIs this year, Root held the fort at 3 and 4 for them, scoring 808 runs in 15 innings, including three centuries, four fifties and a high score of 166*(139) vs West Indies. He batted at 4 in four matches and got 68 and 120 at the position, which solidifies the reason behind his inclusion. Additionally, he also had a healthier strike rate (95.50) than his competition for this position this year.

5. Matthew Breetzke

Breetzke had a dream start to his ODI career, with a mammoth 150(148) on his debut against New Zealand ahead of the Champions Trophy, and he couldn't stop scoring runs despite going through changes in batting position. In the 12 innings that he batted in 2025, he scored a century and 6 fifties to add 706 runs to his name at an average of 64.18 and a strike rate of 96.71. One of the key traits in his skill-set is his flexibility to bat anywhere in the top-4 or 5.

6. KL Rahul (wk)

The Indian wicketkeeper had a change in his role this year, as the management looked keen on using Axar Patel against spin ahead of him at 5. As a finisher, he scored 367 runs in 11 innings, averaging a healthy 52.42 and nailing the role with a strike rate of 107.94. He scored crucial knocks of 42*(34) and 34*(33) in the Champions Trophy semi-final and final, respectively and ended the year with 60(56) and 66*(43) against South Africa as the team's captain.

Honourable mentions: Daryl Mitchell (761 runs), Shai Hope (670 runs), Shreyas Iyer (496 runs) and Agha Salman (667 runs).

All rounders

7. Azmatullah Omarzai

The Afghanistan all-rounder beats Hardik Pandya for the pace-bowling all-rounder's spot, courtesy of better numbers as both batter and bowler. In 6 matches played, Omarzai scored 186 runs at an average of 31.00 and best score of 67, while striking at a decent 98.41. With the ball, he picked 14 wickets, which includes a 5/58 against England in their 8-run win in the Champions Trophy. His bowling average was just 16.21, and his economy rate was 5.29, which makes him a good third pacer.

8. Mitchell Santner

The New Zealand white-ball captain Mitch Santner has been one of the most improved lower-order batters in recent times, and his recent cameos against West Indies, scoring at 158.82 in ODIs and 197.43 in T20Is was a great testament to it. With the bat, he scored 210 runs in 12 innings of 2025 at a strike rate of 115 and took 25 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.57 and bowling average of 26.84.

Bowlers

9. Adil Rashid

England's prime leg-spinner was the highest wicket-taking ODI spinner of 2025, with 30 wickets in just 15 matches to his name. He picked two four-fers this year — one in Ahmedabad against India and one in Cardiff against West Indies and did not go wicketless in any of his 15 outings. 4/63 vs WI were the best figures of the year for him, and he averaged 23.63 at an economy rate of 5.87 runs per over.

10. Matt Henry

New Zealand's lead pacer Matt Henry was this year's highest wicket taker, with 31 scalps in just 13 matches, at an economy of just 5.16 and bowling average of 18.58 and a strike rate of 21.5. Despite missing the Champions Trophy final, he was the tournament's best bowler with 10 wickets in 4 matches. He took three four-fers and 5/42 vs India in the same tournament's group stage game was his best figures.

11. Jayden Seales

In recent years, Seales has emerged as one of the brightest bowling prospects in the world, across formats and his performances in 2025 were a good exhibit of his talent. He picked 27 wickets in 11 innings, including best bowling figures of 6/18 vs Pakistan at Tarouba. He is just behind Henry, in terms of pacers with most wickets this year, with a better average (18.14) and strike rate (18.9), while the economy rate of 5.75 is also impressive.

Honourable mention:  Bernard Scholtz (30 wickets at 10.33 and economy of 3.10)
