In the recent reports, Virat Kohli has expressed his intention to retire from the longest format of the game. While the BCCI is yet to make an official statement, multiple sources have indicated that the former captain has privately communicated his plans to the board, prompting an urgent push from the BCCI to reconsider his decision.
Virat Kohli's Old Video Viral
As speculation continues to swirl around this, a past interview clip of Virat Kohli discussing the mental and physical demands of Test cricket has resurfaced and has gone viral. The video, shared by Sky Sports on X (formerly Twitter), captures a candid conversation of Kohli reflecting on the emotional toll of the five-day game.
“You need to be honest with yourself. I mean, you know test cricket is tough. I mean, even when you're one of the top teams in the world, or probably the best test team in the world over the last few years. You can still go into a space where you probably don't want it at certain stages. You feel like five days. Do I want to do this again.”
So you really need to be absolutely honest with yourself. Are you ready for the hard grind? Are you ready to wake up on day three when things are absolutely stacked up against you, when you know that you are in trouble as a batting unit? Are you going out there to get that 100 or get that 150 for your team. You know it's gonna be tough. You probably have to do it for five six hours over over a period of two days. Are you strong enough to do that?” Kohli added
BCCI Asks Virat Kohli To Reconsider
According to the reports, the BCCI has been taken aback by Kohli’s decision and has urged the star batter to reconsider. The board reportedly wants Kohli to continue at least for the upcoming Test series against England, even if only as a specialist batter.
The timing of the potential retirement is particularly significant, as it comes just days after Indian skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Kohli’s decision appears to be tied to unresolved tensions with the BCCI. Sources close to the matter suggest that the fallout stems from the 2024–25 BGT, during which Kohli reportedly expressed interest in returning as Test captain due to Rohit Sharma’s inconsistent form.
However, the BCCI is believed to have rejected Kohli’s request, choosing instead to invest in a younger leadership group to guide the Test team forward.
