T20 cricket never lets you breathe; last balls, last overs, last-minute chaos - it’s a rollercoaster every single time. With every delivery, hearts take an extra beat, and even the simplest moments often ignite drama.
Just as Ranji Trophy delivers some unreal red-ball drama in the domestic stage, India often discover some of the power-hitters of the game from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic 20-over tournament. Along with that, some of the knocks become memorable on the big stage, just as Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 130 vs Goa.
In the SMAT, Mumbai faced Goa in their tournament opener, and captain Shreyas Iyer unleashed his firepower. As another edition of the tournament is nearing, let’s relive his explosive innings.
Iyer’s explosive hitting leaves Goa with no answers
After Shreyas Iyer made his debut for India, the side got the most reliable middle-order batter, and the Mumbai-born batter proved his abilities with every given opportunity. He may be missing from India’s T20 plans for now, but in domestic cricket, he’s been nothing short of unstoppable. While leading Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, he smashed an outstanding hundred as the world remained in awe.
In their opening clash of the SMAT 2024, Shreyas Iyer’s Mumbai faced Goa, and the match turned out to be a pure spectacle. Bating first, they faced a setback as Angkrish Raghuvanshi returned, scoring only six runs, and captain Shreyas Iyer joined Prithvi Shaw, and Mumbai received the boost that they needed the most.
Turning Goa’s early dominance into Mumbai's brilliance, Shaw stitched a 57-run partnership before walking away, scoring 33 runs in 22 deliveries. Losing two wickets in 66 runs, Mumbai needed a savior and Iyer tightened his grip. Guiding the side towards a strong total, Iyer swung his bat on high.
Tearing apart Goa’s bowlers, Iyer smashed a blistering half-century, and his greatness didn’t stop there. Within a few more deliveries, he smashed an outstanding T20 hundred, keeping the world in awe. As the opponent bowlers were scratching their heads to get rid of Shreyas’ ruthless assault, the Indian batter was left with more destruction.
Stitching a crucial partnership with Shams Mulani, Iyer played an unbeaten knock of 130 runs in just 57 balls, including 11 boundaries with a whopping strike rate of 228.07. With that knock, just not a fiery T20 innings as it was a stern warning to whoever doubted Shreyas Iyer’s T20 excellence.
