India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of the national playing XI for the second Test of the ongoing home series against South Africa. Moreover, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also confirmed that the dashing opener will not be taking part in the upcoming three-match ODI series against the Proteas, prompting wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul to take up leadership role on an interim basis.
As per a recent report, Shubman Gill is now being tipped to hit the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for further rehabilitation as he races against time to gain full recovery before the T20I leg of the home series.
Shubman Gill still resting, to attend CoE after Test series
As per a Times of India report, Indian opening batter Shubman Gill has been advised further rest by a spine specialist in Mumbai. The cricketer will likely be checking himself into the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) on either December 1 or December 2, i.e., roughly a week prior to the launch of the five-match T20I series between hosts India and South Africa.
As advised by the BCCI medical team, Shubman Gill will continue to rest before taking his next steps at the CoE as he aims to attain full recovery.
It is worth noting that the 26-year-old suffered neck pain on Day 2 of India’s first Test of the series against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata last week. The injury forced him to walk off the field after facing just three deliveries, and he was later admitted to a hospital by the BCCI to take precautionary scans.
Shubman Gill later did not walk out to bat in the second innings as India ended up losing the match by 30 runs to concede an early lead to South Africa. Vice-captain of India’s T20I team, it remains to be seen if Gill can make it to the national squad for the five-match series against South Africa as the ‘Men in Blue’ begin charting their roadmap for next year’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
