Shreyas Iyer’s injury break is set to extend, as the star batter is reported to be out of cricketing action for the foreseeable future. The 30-year-old sustained a major injury while fielding during the 3rd ODI of India’s tour of Australia on the 25th of December in Sydney.

He underwent a minor procedure and was kept under observation in the ICU after BCCI confirmed that he had sustained a blunt-force abdominal injury that caused a laceration to his spleen and resulted in internal bleeding. The surgery had become necessary to control the internal bleeding.

Iyer likely to be out of cricketing action for two to three months

Iyer is now back home and is constantly being monitored. According to India Today, he underwent an ultrasonography (USG) scan under the guidance of sports medicine specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.

The Indian vice-captain has been cleared to resume daily activities and engage in some basic exercises. However, he is strictly prohibited from doing any severe training that could put his body under pressure for at least another month.

He is scheduled to undergo another UCG scan after two months, and based on the results of that scan, he will be allowed to resume his training. If cleared after two months, he will be allowed to follow a rehabilitation plan designed by BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Given this recovery timeline, the Indian ODI vice-captain will be out of cricketing action for at least two to three months. In effect, he will miss out on the ODI series scheduled against South Africa and New Zealand.

India does not have any more ODI matches scheduled until July after the New Zealand series, which means Iyer could return to cricketing action directly during the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will continue leading the Punjab Kings in the upcoming season.
