Multan Sultans chased down a meagre target of 125 runs to begin their title defence in style against Karachi Kings on Thursday, 27 January. Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan, who has seen an incredible rise in his stocks in world cricket in the last year was once again the star of the show, scoring a classy half century to get his team over the line.
While most batsmen found it difficult to play their shots on a Karachi track that gripped and turned in the first day of the tournament, Rizwan chose his big shots carefully to make the chase rather comfortable for the title holders.
The Multan captain did ride his luck a couple of times though after he escaped a close DRS shout on the LBW and then a dropped catch at square leg.
Rest of the Multan innings was fairly uneventful with the rest of the batsmen playing a couple of good shots but failing to convert their starts into a big score. With the target being really small, Multan were able to hang around and nudge it along the ground rather than attempting to clear the ropes on every single delivery.
Earlier in the innings, Imran Tahir’s fabulous spell of 3/16 stifled Karachi and they were put into submission by the variety of the maestro. Barring Tahir, Shahnawaz Dahani too had a good outing against Karachi, who failed to hit boundaries and conceded a large chunk of doubt balls. At the end, the target was just not enough for the bowlers and Multan were able to chase the game down with ease.
