Bangladesh finally ended their long losing streak in the ODI format with a 16-run win over Sri Lanka in Colombo. This victory not only helped them level the three-match series 1-1 but also pushed them up in the ICC ODI rankings. The Tigers are now ranked ninth, just above the West Indies.

The Tigers were humiliated by Sri Lanka in the first ODI after they collapsed from 100/1 to 167/10 in a 245-run chase. The 77-run defeat must have felt like a punch in the gut, but Bangladesh made a swift comeback in the second ODI.

Bangladesh Climb To 9th Spot In ICC ODI Rankings

In the second ODI against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh posted a total of 248 runs in the first inning. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam led the way with his maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket, helping Bangladesh defend their total and beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs.

With that win, Bangladesh now have 78 rating points and climbed to ninth position in the ICC Team ODI Rankings. They pipped West Indies, who sit 10th at 77.

Earlier in May, the Tigers had dropped to 10th place in the ODI rankings for the first time in nearly 18 years. That fall came after a string of poor performances in the 50-over format.

The losing streak had started back in November last year. They lost the third ODI to Afghanistan in Sharjah and the series 2-1. After that, things got worse as Bangladesh were whitewashed 3-0 by the West Indies in December.

The bad run continued in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, where they lost to both India and New Zealand. Their seventh straight loss came last Wednesday in the first ODI against Sri Lanka.

Tanvir Islam’s Career-Best Spell Changes Bangladesh’s Fortune

Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam delivered a stunning spell of 5/39 to help Bangladesh defeat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second ODI. His performance set a new record for the best bowling figures by a Bangladeshi in ODIs against Sri Lanka, surpassing Abdur Razzak’s 5/62.

The left-arm spinner dismissed five key batters, outclassing Mehidy Hasan and even Shakib Al Hasan, whose best against Sri Lanka is 3/47.
