Shubman Gill was the star of the Edgbaston Test for India as the skipper played the innings of his life and slammed 430 runs in the combined two innings, as he shattered several records. He slammed 269 in the first innings and added a further 161 in the second to put India on the verge of a famous win.

However, despite a marathon performance, Gill could land in trouble for a mistake that he did during India's second innings, and it could hurt the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and could cost them INR 250 crore.

During India's second innings, the team posted 427/6 when Shubman Gill came out from the pavilion to declare the innings, wearing Nike tights. In hindsight, it looks as if the India skipper made no mistake by wearing Nike tights but the bigger picture tells an entirely different story.

Why BCCI could land in trouble due to Gill's actions?

BCCI is sponsored by Adidas and the Indian players are expected to wear their merchandise only but Gill didn't follow the rules and came out wearing Nike merchandise.

It is assumed that the India captain came out in a hurry to declare the innings and might have forgotten about the sponsorship terms and details. He certainly violated the code of conduct and could receive a notice from the board, explaining his actions.

Can Adidas take action against BCCI?

In 2023, Adidas and BCCI signed an INR 250 crore deal that will be in effect till March 2028. However, after Gill's actions, Adidas has all the rights to cancel the deal with the Indian board, and can also ask for compensation since their player didn't abide to the terms and conditions.

However, since BCCI is the richest board getting associated with them will also benefit Adidas. Hence, the sports merchandise group could only give a warning to the player and the board and continue with the partnership as stated in the contract.
