Zimbabwe opener Prince Masvaure has been ruled out of the playing XI of the second Test against South Africa at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The 36-year-old cricketer was deemed unfit to play due to a respiratory tract infection.
Masvaure himself had replaced opener Brian Bennett as a concussion substitute in the series opener last week. Zimbabwe Cricket has now named Dion Myers as his replacement for the series-deciding second Test prior to the toss on Sunday, July 6.
Prince Masvaure ‘Coughs Up’ A Shock Omission
Prince Masvaure is suffering from a respiratory tract infection, prompting Zimbabwe Cricket to rule him out of the second Test match against South Africa in Bulawayo between Sunday, July 6 and Thursday, July 10. In an official statement prior to the match, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed:
“Masvaure is suffering from a respiratory tract infection and was deemed unfit to play.”
Young Dion Myers, with an experience of just four Tests to date, has been recalled back into the national XI as a replacement for Masvaure. Myers last played a Test for Zimbabwe back in January earlier this year against Afghanistan.
Apart from Dion Myers, Zimbabwe Cricket named another change to the playing XI in the form of Kundai Matigimu coming in for Vincent Masekesa. Vincent, who picked up three wickets across both innings of the series-opening first Test, was dropped from the playing XI to make way for Kundai Matigimu’s international debut.
Zimbabwe Bowlers Fall Flat On Day 1
Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Zimbabwe struggled to halt South Africa’s batting rampage on Day 1. At the end of Tea break, the Proteas reached a commanding 243-3 from 56 overs.
Fast bowler Tanaka Chivanga himself accounted for two of those wickets, which included the prized scalp of half-centurion David Bedingham.
