Team India defeated New Zealand in a nail-biter in the first ODI on Wednesday. The Men in Blue fought hard and eventually won the game by 12 runs, courtesy of a sublime double century from Shubman Gill.

India posted a mammoth 349 in the allotted 50 overs, out of which Gill smacked 208 off 149 balls, laced with 19 fours and 9 sixes.

In reply, New Zealand lost the plot in the first 25 overs, but a Michael Bracewell stunning counter-attacking century brought the visitors back in the contest.

But 350 proved to be a bit too much as the Kiwis lost the game in the final over.

Talking about Gill's knock after the match, Sunil Gavaskar lauded Gill's knock as 'extraordinary' and showered praise on the youngster's mentality.

"It was an unbelievable innings. Innings of a young man who seems to have a 35-year-old head on his shoulder. The way he paced his innings, the way he was counterattacking the bowlers.

After the hundred, the way he went into top gear was simply fantastic to watch. It was a delight because at the end of the day he seemed as fresh as a daisy. His innings certainly augurs well for the future and the ODI World Cup," Gavaskar said to IndiaToday.

The two teams will square off once again in the second ODI of the series, which takes place on Saturday from Raipur.
