Mark Boucher has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace outbound Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indians head coach. The legendary Sri Lankan batsman recently left his MI role after he was elevated to a higher profile by the franchise.

Notably, reports were rife earlier about Boucher joining the MI Cape Town setup. However, the coaching job for the new SA20 T20 franchise eventually went to Simon Katich.

Boucher may lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023

Earlier this week, the former wicketkeeper-batsman said that he will be stepping down as South Africa’s head coach following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Now as per recent reports, the cricketer has been eyed by the Mumbai Indians franchise to take over the coaching job of the Rohit Sharma-led side.

The Proteas legend already has IPL experience to his credit, having previously worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders as their wicketkeeping consultant in 2016.

During his tenure, the Proteas made some steady advancements in their Test approach, especially in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle.

It remains to be seen whether he would now bag the top job for the Mumbai Indians. The franchise is yet to unveil Jayawardene’s successor and is likely to make an announcement soon.
