Leaving captaincy can be a boon to Kane Williamson, thinks Andre Adams

The former Kiwi all-rounder Andre Adams believes Kane Williamson is enduring a slump in form and leaving captaincy in one of the formats can invigorate his career. 

Williamson, who has been a trailblazer of the New Zealand team across all the formats has seemingly lost his touch, especially this year. 

After missing most of the action due to his persistent elbow injury, the 32-year-old was a major flop in the IPL 2022. Afterwards, he has been able to score only 124 runs in 10 innings across all three formats. 

The prime example of Williamson's underperformance was witnessed in his latest outing, wherein he was outfoxed by Adam Zampa's full-toss. 

Furthermore, New Zealand has already lost the ongoing ODI series against Australia, which has put Williamson under the pump. 

In this regard, Adams stated that the skipper has failed to contribute enough to the team in the last 12-18 months, while also plagued with injuries. 

Furthermore, the 47-year-old thinks Tom Latham can take the reins from Williamson in the ODI format. 

"He hasn't scored the runs you would expect - he's been through a difficult time for the last 12 to 18 months," Adams told Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine from Australia.

"Maybe it is better to have a new captain and let Kane bat - I don't think Kane has an ego in that aspect, he will just do what is best for the team.

"The way Ross Taylor lost the captaincy wasn't great, but it worked out well for him as a batsman in the end."
