Ricky Ponting opines on Trent Boult's contract decision

The former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes more players will follow Trent Boult's lead to let go of their contract in favour of franchise T20 leagues.

Earlier this month, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) agreed to release Boult from the central contract, on the request of the left-arm pacer wanting to spend more time with his family and participate in T20 leagues.

Although Boult will feature in the T20 World Cup 2022, he is likely to be missing most of the bilateral tournaments. The 33-year-old arrived at this decision to prepare for life after cricket.

In a recent interview, Ponting reckoned that it's becoming harder for the players to maintain a perfect balance between international and T20 leagues.

"I think it's inevitable now with the amount of T20 domestic tournaments that are popping up all around the world now," Ponting said on The ICC Review," said Ponting on ICC Review

"And for someone like Trent Boult, and no disrespect to New Zealand at all, but I'm sure their national contracts are probably only reflective of maybe what he would make in one of these T20 domestic tournaments."

Ponting hopes NZC and Boult can handle these situations well

Ponting thinks Boult will still be a part of the series involving top cricketing nations, subject to the selectors, boards and pacer coming to a mutual agreement.

"Trent will have to give up something or he wouldn't have made the decision that he's made. But I think if it's handled well, then there's no reason why they can't both co-exist in a reasonable manner."
