Team India may well suffer another major setback leading up to the first Test against England as one of the backup players for the series, Avesh Khan has injured his thumb in the practice match against the selected county side.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that the pacer has been taken for a scan and that he is being monitored by the medical team.
Notably, Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar were playing for the county side in the practice game that has been awarded the status of a first-class game. He is there in England as a backup bowler in case the team management needs to strengthen the pace department of the side in a long Test series.
Avesh was injured in his left hand while fielding in his follow through and was seen in serious pain when the Indian team physio offered medical help. Later, he walked out of the field.
Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat first with Rohit Sharma leading the side as both Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were rested from the game. Among bowlers, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin were also rested.
India could not make the best use of good batting conditions in Durham as they slipped to 80 for the loss of three wickets at the lunch interval. The batsmen who got dismissed in the first session of the game were the openers Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara.
