A high-flying Zimbabwean unit floored a clueless USA bunch in match number 17 of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 qualifiers. The hosts registered a thumping victory, with a margin of over 300 runs, at the Harare Sports Club, as they storm their way into the Super Six stage of the tournament.

Remarkably, the Zimbabwean team has also scripted their way onto the ODI history books, owing to the magnitude of their latest margin of win.

Zimbabwe joins India in remarkable ODI feat

Ever since the inception of ODI cricket over 52 years ago, only two teams have registered a win with more than 300 runs. Interestingly, both these instances occurred this year, with Zimbabwe’s dominance over USA becoming the latest of the two lop-sided affairs.

Earlier, Team India crushed a visiting Sri Lankan side in Thiruvananthapuram, by a staggering margin of 317 runs. Batting first, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill charted sparkling tons to bolster the team total to 390-5. Later, the ‘Men in Blue’ bowlers folded up Sri Lanka for just 73 in 22 overs.

The astounding victory by the Rohit Sharma-led side earlier this year broke the previous ODI record held by New Zealand. Back in 2008, the ‘Black Caps’ had demolished Ireland by 290 runs in Aberdeen.

In the meantime, Zimbabwe flogged the USA on their way to claiming a 304-run win, marking only the second instance in ODI history with a victory margin of over 300 runs. Captain Sean Williams clubbed 174* from just 101 deliveries, while Ryan Burl clobbered a 16-ball 47 to turbo-charge Zimbabwe to 408-6, their highest total in ODIs.

In response, the USA batters were dusted out for a mere 104 in 25.1 overs, courtesy of a collective bowling effort from the Chevrons bowlers.

Despite their confident wins over West Indies and USA in successive games, Zimbabwe’s campaign is far from over as they gear up to compete in the Super Six stage of the competition.

Their immediate assignment features a date with Oman in Harare on July 1. Williams and co. will look to extend their good fortunes in the coming weeks, as a spot in the qualifier’s finals will earn them tickets for the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India.
