Jason Holder Claims Unwanted Record Following Defeat To Netherlands in WC Qualifiers

Jason Holder was at the receiving end of a brutal six-hitting assault from Netherlands’ all-rounder Logan van Beek. The West Indies speedster leaked 30 runs in the Super Over, after the initial contest ended in a thrilling high-scoring tie between the two sides.

Earlier in the game, Holder had conceded just 59 runs from his 10 overs, and claimed the wicket of Netherlands’ centurion Teja Nidamanuru during a critical juncture.

Courtesy of his Super Over turmoil, the West Indies all-round veteran has now achieved an unwanted record in ODI cricket.

Jason Holder becomes first to claim this unwanted ODI record

Jason Holder made his ODI debut in June 2014, with a home fixture against Australia. The cricketer has featured in 137 ODI matches for his country, and led in 86 of them including the 2015 and 2019 World Cup matches.

Despite holding an impressive bowling record in the format (158 wickets), he also has a certain unwanted one to his name.

As of now, the Barbados all-rounder was the only ODI bowler in history to concede 30-plus runs in an over twice in the format. Interestingly, the cricketer achieved this undesirable stat in the same 2015 World Cup game against South Africa, that too, in successive overs.

A rampaging AB de Villiers leathered Holder apart with 34 and 30 runs in consecutive overs to finish off the South African innings at a match-winning 408-5.

More than eight years later, the speedster was at the receiving end of a similar larruping from Logan van Beek, albeit in a Super Over. His latest bowling meltdown makes him the first player to concede 30 runs in any Super Over (One-Day or T20).

Fortunately for the West Indies legend, he will soon get a chance at redemption as his team has made it to the Super Six stage of the ongoing World Cup 2023 Qualifiers, despite their shock defeats to Zimbabwe and Netherlands.

They will now face the Group B toppers at the Queens Park Oval in Bulawayo. The much-awaited contest, scheduled to be played on June 30, continues their quest of securing a place at the 2023 World Cup in India.
