Yashasvi Jaiswal battered and bruised a struggling English attack in the second Indian innings of the Rajkot Test. After retiring himself at the brink of Day 3 at 104*, the young opening batsman resumed his innings the following morning to convert it into a double ton, the second of his Test career and the second in succession this series.

Remarkably, Jaiswal did so with much panache, unleashing an extraordinary sequence of sixes, including three in a row off senior Englishman and legendary fast bowler James Anderson.

As it turned out, the 22-year-old attained a huge Indian Test record, one previously held by his current teammate and captain Rohit Sharma as well by former Indian bowling all-rounder Harbhajan Singh.

Yashasvi Jaiswal soars past Rohit Sharma for this record

Yashasvi Jaiswal completed his double hundred off just 231 balls by the second session of Day 4. By the time of reaching his landmark figure, the youngster had already tallied 14 boundaries and 10 sixes.

Jaiswal’s six-hitting spree in the innings also extended his series tally to 20 maximums, thus taking him past dashing opening batsman Rohit Sharma’s collection for most sixes by an Indian player in a single series. Sharma had previously belted 19 sixes during India’s home series against South Africa in 2015.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, meanwhile, slipped to number three for the national record. The bowling all-rounder had swatted the New Zealanders for 14 maximums during India’s home series from 2010.

While Yashasvi Jaiswal overhauled Rohit Sharma’s 19-sixes collection by belting James Anderson for three successive maximums, the unbeaten double-centurion belted Joe Root for two more sixes after completing his double hundred to extend his series-tally to 22 sixes.

After Yashasvi’s record-shattering effort, here is a look at Indian batters with most sixes to their names in a single series:

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal - 22* sixes vs England, 2024 series
  • Rohit Sharma - 19 sixes vs South Africa, 2015 series
  • Harbhajan Singh - 14 sixes vs New Zealand, 2010 series

Meanwhile, Jaiswal equalled Pakistan's former captain Wasim Akram's - who held the world record for most number of sixes in a Test innings - tally.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s marathon knock took the Indian lead past the 550-run mark against England on Day 4 of the Rajkot Test.

The innings also marked his career-best Test score, bettering his previous highest of 209 he unleashed earlier this month against the same opponents.
