When will reserve day be used? [Source: @HomeOfCricket/x.com]
After months of buildup the World Test Championship (WTC) finally commenced with South Africa taking on Australia in the riveting battle at the Lord's. Both the sides finished in top two of the points table and will be eager to add the WTC mace in their trophy cabinet.
The Pat Cummins led Australian side are the defending champions, having defeated India in the finals, two years ago. However, they will be up against a Proteas team who are on a 7 game winning streak.
The match is taking place in London and the weather there is unpredictable. There is no rain on Day 1, but Day 2 and 3 has thunderstorm predictions and if it rains and spoils the fun then reserve day could come into play to salvage a result of the finale.
WTC final: When will a reserve day be used?
The finale will go on from June 11 to June 15 at the Lord's. However, the reserve day (6th day) will only come into play if time has been lost due to bad weather across five days and no result has been possible at the end of Day 5.
The reserve day rule came into play during the WTC final in 2021 between India and New Zealand. The first day in Southampton was washed out due to rain and hence the reserve day was used in the finale.
Australia eyeing second WTC title, Proteas first
The Aussies are defending champions and will be eager to win the title and reclaim their crown. On the other hand, the Proteas side last won an ICC trophy way back in 1998 and since then they have been eluded of an ICC trophy.
The Proteas team also had a dream start to the finale as Kagiso Rabada showed his class and dismissed Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne in quick successions.
