The much-awaited World Test Championship Final (WTC) started on 7th of June with two top teams in world cricket, fighting it out in the middle. However, right from the day 1, India were put on the back foot and though they managed to hung in till the final day, they, honestly, never looked like winning the game. In the end, Australia hammered India by 209 runs as India lost seven wickets in the morning session of day 5 to win the World Test Championship in style.

It all started with Australia posting 469 runs in the first innings, courtesy of twin-centuries by Head and Smith. India could not muster enough runs in their first innings and gave away a lead of 173 runs after which India were always behind the 8-ball.

Eventually, India were handed a humongous task of chasing down a target of 444 which was never going to be easy. India though had a glimmer of hope coming into day 5, with 7 wickets in hand and 280 runs needed, but they were completely blown away in the morning session.

Talking Points of the first session of day 5

Boland's double-blow sink India

Kohli-Rahane's partnership was critical for India in their bid to chase down a record target in this WTC Final. Kohli especially was looked by many as India's biggest hope but the seventh over of the day put all those hopes to bed.

Scott Boland with his immaculate line and length got rid of Kohli in the third ball of the 47th over and then handed another big blow with a wicket of Jadeja on the fifth delivery. India were reduced from 179-3 to 179-5 and billions of Indian fans hoping for a miracle were left completely shocked and heartbroken in matter of few minutes.

Losing wickets in cluster - the story continues for India

India have been losing wickets in cluster in recent times and that story continued in the WTC final as well. As mentioned earlier, India were 179-3 at one point in time with Kohli and Rahane going well. However, once Kohli lost his wicket, things started falling apart. Rahane showed some resistance but he could not last long either and it all ended very quickly as India were bundled out for just 234.

This is a big problem for India as their batting line-up just seem to crumble drastically under pressure and they need to show better application in the next cycle of WTC.

Overall, it was a convincing win for Australia as they showed better application and skills throughout the course of this Test.  Australia are now the only team to win all four ICC titles and India's drought of ICC title from last 10 years seems a never-ending love story now.
