The greatest of all formats makes a grand comeback on Wednesday, with Australia taking on South Africa in the much-awaited World Test Championship final. The venue for the ultimate clash is none other than the Mecca of cricket, Lord's Cricket Ground.

Led by Pat Cummins, Australia were phenomenal in their earlier WTC fixtures. The defending champions crushed an under-transition Indian side in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to confirm their second consecutive WTC final appearance.

While the eyes will be on Steve Smith and Pat Cummins, the likes of Starc, Hazlewood and Travis Head could play instrumental roles in helping Australia defend their title.

South Africa, on the other hand, would be aiming to script history by dethroning Cummins and co. and adding a new chapter to their rich cricketing legacy. Markram, Bavuma and Stubbs add quality to their batting unit, while Rabada and Jansen are quite capable of decimating the Aussie batting unit.

As the stage is set for an epic battle, let's see how the surface at the Lord's Cricket Ground will behave throughout the match.

Lord's Cricket Ground Pitch Report: Is The Surface Batting Or Bowling Friendly?

The surface at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground generally offers a seam-friendly deck where the fast bowlers enjoy bowling in the middle. The track for the WTC final is expected to have a firm grass covering; so, expect the fast bowlers to utilise the conditions and make things tough for the batters, at least in the initial four to five sessions.

Having said that, the batters must concentrate on judging the line and length of the ball, using their feet accordingly and playing the ball late through the square to succeed at this venue. The much-talked-about slope also plays a key role, as the fast bowlers can use it to move the ball both ways during the game.

The spinners could get some turn, with the pitch getting dried up with time. If it deteriorates, the hit-the-deck seamers will also come into play from day four onwards. Considering teams batting first have won 53 and lost only 43 Tests here, the toss-winner could follow a traditional approach and bat first.
