Gujarat Giants walloped UP Warriorz Women by six wickets to record its first win of the WPL 2025 season in match number three of the competition. Senior pros Ashleigh Gardner and Deandra Dottin headlined Giants’ emphatic win with exceptional all-round performances, while young spinner Priya Mishra excelled with the ball by picking up three huge wickets.

UPW vs GG Highlights: Uma Chetry, Deepti Sharma Rectify Warriorz’ Top-Order Setback

Batting first, UP Warriorz lost both openers, Kiran Navgire and Dinesh Vrinda to Deandra Dottin and Ashleigh Gardner respectively inside the first three overs of the match. Tottering at 22-2 in 2.4 overs, wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry conjured a fighting 51-run partnership with captain and number four batter Deepti Sharma.

Chetry belted four boundaries during her cunning 24-run knock, until she got caught out by Priya Mishra off Dottin (2-34) at the halfway stage of the innings with Warriorz reaching 73-3.

Following Uma Chetry’s exit, Gujarat Giants spinner Priya Mishra snared the wickets of middle-order batters and overseas stars Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris in the space of just three balls as the Warriorz slipped from 73-2 to 78-5. Deepti Sharma raged on for a while to top-score in the UP Warriorz innings by composing 39 runs from just 27 balls with six boundaries, before the skipper also had her well-set stay curtailed by Mishra (3-25).

Shweta Sehrawat (16 off 18) and Alana King (19* off 14) chipped in with handy runs during the slog overs as the Warriorz reached 143-9 by the completion of their innings. For the Giants, Ashleigh Gardner (2-39) deceived Sehrawat with a slower delivery to pick up her second wicket of the evening.

Kashvee Gautam also walked away with the prized scalp of Sophie Ecclestone in her economical four-over spell of 1-15.

Defending 144 for a win, UP Warriorz spinner Grace Harris struck big in her first over of the innings by getting rid of in-form Gujarat Giants opener Beth Mooney for a first-ball duck. Sophie Ecclestone also struck earlier in her new ball spell by knocking over Dayalan Hemalatha as the Giants crashed to 2-2 at one stage of their run-chase.

While Wolvaardt counterattacked for a while with a blistering 22-run knock, the senior South African batter was also cleaned up by Ecclestone (2-16) in the ninth over of the innings.

Amidst tumbling top-order wickets, Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner pacified early nerves with an attacking half-century, scoring 52 runs from just 32 balls with five boundaries and three huge sixes.

While Gardner made her way back to the sheds at 86-4 courtesy of Tahlia McGrath (1-21), middle-order batters Harleen Deol (34* off 30) and Deandra Dottin (33* off 18) struck swift 30s each as Gujarat Giants romped through UP Warriorz’ 143 with six wickets and two overs to spare.
