Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has revealed the profound emotional toll of being estranged from his 11-year-old son, Zoravar, disclosing that he hasn’t seen the child in two years and has been blocked from all communication for the past year.
In a candid conversation on the ANI Podcast, the 39-year-old, who retired from international cricket in August 2024, shared how he leans on spirituality to cope with the void.
Dhawan Opens Up On Emotional Detachment From Son
The left-handed opener, who divorced Australian wife Aesha Mukerji in October 2023, lost custody of Zoravar and has been restricted to limited virtual access despite court-mandated video calls.
"It has been two years since I've seen my son, one year since I last spoke to him because I'm blocked from everywhere. It has been difficult, but you learn to live with it. I miss him and speak to him spiritually," Dhawan said in the podcast his voice tinged with emotional overwhelming.
Dhawan, who last shared physical moments with Zoravar during the toddler’s infancy, now turns to introspection.
"I feel through affirmations that I'm conversing with him every day, hugging him. I put my energy into it spiritually. It is the only way I can bring back my son. My sadness won't help. I manifest. When I sit for my meditation, I visualize those things. My son is 11 years old now, but I have seen him for only two-and-a-half years of his life."
Dhawan Gets Emotional
When asked what he would do if reunited with Zoravar, Dhawan shared his priorities as his voice broke.
"I would first hug him. I'll first spend time with him. Maybe if he tears up, I'll cry with him. I'll enjoy my time with him."
Since retiring, Dhawan has channelled his energy into spiritual pursuits and personal growth, a stark contrast to his once-bustling life on the field. Yet, his resolve as a father remains unshaken.
Notably, Shikhar Dhawan, who has been named as the brand ambassador of Champions Trophy 2025, has been a prolific run-scorer across formats, amassing 6793 ODI runs at an average of 44.11 with 17 centuries and 39 fifties. In T20Is, he scored 1759 runs at a strike rate of 126.36, while in Tests, he notched 2315 runs at 40.61, including 7 centuries.
