Pakistan bowlers were at the receiving end of some serious punishment from New Zealand batters during their high-profile World Cup 2023 showdown in Bengaluru. After Babar Azam made the cardinal mistake of opting to field first, the ‘Black Caps’ amassed a colossal 401-6 upfront in their 50 overs.

Pakistan’s new-ball pacer Shaheen Afridi and fellow speedster Haris Rauf leaked 175 runs from their combined 20 overs, as both cricketers ended up attaining a huge unwanted record through the course of New Zealand’s rampage.

Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf achieve huge unwanted record

Pakistan’s bowling mainstay Shaheen Afridi conceded 90 runs from his 10 wicketless overs to become the most expensive ‘Men in Green’ bowler in a single World Cup match. Remarkably, he broke the record of his pacemate Haris Rauf mere minutes after the latter had attained the unwanted record during the same New Zealand innings.

Rauf picked up a wicket, that of New Zealand’s marauding number four Daryl Mitchell, but leaked 85 runs from his 10 overs.

Both Shaheen and Rauf broke Hasan Ali’s record of most expensive figures among Pakistan bowlers in a single World Cup innings. Back in 2019 during a match against India in Manchester, Ali had conceded 84 runs from just his nine overs.

Interestingly, Ali also leaked 82 runs from 10 overs against New Zealand, as three Pakistan frontline bowlers ended up conceding over 80 runs in their spells against Kane Williamson and co. in their must-win World Cup 2023 outing.

Shaheen Afridi, on the other hand, was recently crowned as the number one bowler on the ICC ODI rankings. The cricketer recently returned with scintillating three-fers against South Africa and Bangladesh to take his World Cup 2023 tally to 16 wickets.
