Indian batsman KL Rahul has been appointed as Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the ongoing 2023 World Cup, considering Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the tournament owing to his injury. The dynamic all-rounder sustained an ankle injury during India’s World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh.

The setback forced Pandya out of India’s subsequent matches against New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka, before he was ruled out of the tournament to make way for Prasidh Krishna as his replacement.

KL Rahul, who crafted match-winning specials against Australia, Bangladesh and England in the ongoing 2023 World Cup, has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team after Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the tournament.

Interestingly, the 31-year-old made his return to the Indian team just in time for the 2023 World Cup after missing out nearly half-a-year worth of cricketing action owing to an injury he coped during the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Rahul has led Team India in nine ODI matches so far, yielding six wins for his country against three defeats. The cricketer also holds a prestigious captaincy record for his IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Rahul will now take field for the Indian team as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in their blockbuster World Cup 2023 showdown against South Africa. The much-awaited contest is slated to be played on November 5 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The elegant middle-order batsman will subsequently travel to Bangalore along with the rest of his teammates to face Netherlands in their final Group game on November 12.

Earlier in the competition, the Indian team became the first side of the 2023 World Cup to qualify for the semi-finals, winning each of their first seven fixtures with emphatic margins.
