Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell navigated New Zealand to safety against India in their high-profile World Cup 2023 standoff in Dharamsala. After losing openers Devon Conway and Will Young early in the match, the two batting all-rounders countered India’s high-flying pace attack on a lively HPCA surface with counterattacking diligence and tactical stroke play.

From 19-2 in 8.1 overs, Ravindra and Mitchell took New Zealand past the 150-run mark without further casualties, with both batters slapping identical half-centuries in the middle overs.

Through the course of their game-changing partnership, the two cricketers scripted themselves into history books as they scaled a couple of rare World Cup national records against India.

Mitchell, Ravindra script rare partnership records

Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell formed New Zealand’s all-time highest third-wicket stand against India at a World Cup game through their 159-run effort in 2023. Moreover, the two also soared past Mark Greatbatch and Andrew Jones’ 82-run match-winning partnership from 1992 to record New Zealand’s highest-ever World Cup partnership against India for any wicket.

Out-of-action Kane Williamson features twice in New Zealand’s top five list for the highest World Cup partnerships against India through his 2019 semi-final knock. Back in July 2019 at Manchester, Williamson had formed a 68-run alliance with Henry Nicholls and shared another 65 runs with Ross Taylor to steer his side towards the final. Here is a look at New Zealand’s top five partnerships against India at a World Cup stage for any wicket.

Highest partnership for NZ against India in World Cup (any wicket)

  • Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell - 159 runs, World Cup 2023
  • Mark Greatbatch and Andrew Jones - 82 runs, World Cup 1992
  • Bruce Edgar and Glenn Turner - 80* runs, World Cup 1979
  • Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson - 68 runs, World Cup 2019
  • Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor - 65 runs, World Cup 2019

Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra’s record stand was eventually broken by tearaway speedster Mohammed Shami to hand India their first wicket in more than 25 overs. The legendary fast bowler deceived Ravindra against the run-of-play with a slower off-cutter, thus cutting short the left-hander’s stay at 75.
