IND vs UAE Highlights: India Dominate Powerplay Despite Losing Three Wickets

Team India lost opener Smriti Mandhana in just the third over of the match to Kavisha Egodage. Dayalan Hemalatha at number three was cleaned up by Heena Hotchandani a couple of overs later as India slipped to 52-2 after being invited to bat first.

Despite losing early wickets, blistering opener Shafali Verma ensured Team India dominated throughout the powerplay with a 56-run start in the first six overs. Verma herself smacked 37 off those runs from just 18 deliveries before under-edging one towards UAE wicketkeeper Theertha Satish off Samaira Dharnidharka.

Forming forces with Jemimah Rodrigues at 52-3, captain Harmanpreet Kaur anchored the Indian innings by taking it past the 100-run mark in less than 11 overs. The skipper bludgeoned seven boundaries and a six and shared a 54-run partnership with Rodrigues and another 75 runs with Richa Ghosh. Kaur was eventually run out in the final over after charting 66 runs from 47 balls.

Arriving to the crease at 106-4 in the 12th over, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh clobbered 64 unbeaten runs from just 29 deliveries to set up India Women’s first-ever 200-plus total in T20Is. The cricketer launched 12 boundaries and one huge six in her whirlwind knock as Team India blazed its way to 201-5 from 20 overs.

India’s new-ball pace operators Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar plummeted UAE early with two key wickets within the opening powerplay. While Renuka dismissed UAE opener Theertha Satish for just four, Vastrakar cleaned up Rinitha Rajith in the sixth over as UAE reached a sluggish 31-2 at the end of the opening powerplay.

Debutant Tanuja Kanwar also starred with the ball by getting rid of UAE captain Esha Oza to finish with impressive figures of 1-14.

Ace spinner Deepti Sharma picked up two UAE wickets in the middle-overs to finish with figures of 2-23. She dismissed Samaira Dharnidharka before deceiving Heena Hotchandani in one of her return spells to restrict UAE to just 123-7 in 20 overs.

Team India ended up claiming a huge 78-run win to strengthen themselves at the top of the 2024 Women’s T20 Asia Cup Group A points table.
