Smriti Mandhana failed to do much damage on Sunday when India met the UAE in Match 5 of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 in Dambulla. The swashbuckling batter could only manage 13 off 9 balls before Kavisha Egodage got the big wicket on her second ball of the day.

After the UAE invited them to bat first, Mandhana tried to play a big shot during the third over of India’s innings. She came down the track to play a lofted shot over mid-off, but failed to get the elevation.

Placed mid-off, Rinitha Rajith ran to her right to grab an excellent catch, as the star Indian batter had a rare failure in a dream run she was having lately.

At the time of writing this, India captain Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur are in the middle, as India have slipped to 59/3 after 6.2 overs. Although the run rate is high, it was unexpected to see three India batters lose their wickets inside the powerplay.

Notably, India made a strong start in the competition by beating arch-rivals Pakistan in their tournament opener.
