In a massive development during the ongoing fifth Test match between India and England in Dharamsala, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was forced to sit out of the third day's play, following a back issue.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) communicated through a statement on Saturday, revealing that the skipper's absence was due to a stiff back.

IND vs ENG: Why is Rohit Sharma not on the field?

"UPDATE: Captain Rohit Sharma has not taken the field on Day 3 due to a stiff back," the BCCI shared via a tweet.

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, the responsibility of leading the Indian team has fallen to fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

This development follows Rohit's standout performance on the second day, where he, alongside Shubman Gill, played a massive role in bolstering India's position with a century.

Rohit's innings was a masterclass in batting as he scored 103 runs off 162 balls, a knock filled with 13 boundaries and three sixes, before being dismissed by England's captain, Ben Stokes. It is speculated that Rohit's back issues may have originated during this impressive batting display.

Meanwhile, the contributions from Rohit and Gill were instrumental in ending Day 2 on a high note for India. However, the third day saw the Indian innings wrapping up swiftly within the first seven overs.

Kuldeep Yadav's dismissal for 30 runs by James Anderson was a highlight, marking Anderson's 700th wicket in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Shoaib Bashir claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing Bumrah, concluding the Indian innings.

England commenced their batting facing a massive challenge to overcome India's formidable lead. The early loss of Ben Duckett's wicket has further complicated the visitors' situation, leaving England at 2/1 after three overs, stull trailing by 257 runs.
