Virat Kohli made an early entrance to the crease on Day 3 for the second time in succession at Centurion, after both Indian openers had failed to negotiate South Africa’s new-ball threat in each innings of the match.

With India staring at a huge first-innings deficit of 163 runs, the batting veteran started cautiously before he unfurled a gorgeous off-drive against Marco Jansen in the 11th delivery of his innings.

Virat Kohli opens his account with an imposing drive

Virat Kohli, who scored 38 runs in the first Indian innings on Day 1, launched his second batting recital with a confident off-drive against Marco Jansen, after the South African speedster had sent down a gentle loosener towards his off-stump.

The boundary also opened Kohli’s account after he cautiously saw off the new-ball threat by letting go of the first 11 deliveries of his innings.

Virat Kohli also dispatched Marco Jansen for another boundary a couple of deliveries later, this time crashing the lanky Proteas fast bowler over point to race towards a perfect start.

Earlier, India had lost both their openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, to Kagiso Rabada and debutant Nandre Burger sinking further down at 13-2 despite chasing the uphill task of making a match out of their Centurion bout.

At the halfway stage of the game, South Africa gained a colossal 163-run first innings lead off the back of Dean Elgar’s 185 and Jansen’s 84*.
