Virat Kohli received a huge reprieve by Wiaan Mulder at slips on Day 3 of the first Test match between India and hosts South Africa at Centurion. The Indian veteran, batting at 8* at the time, had nicked one off South African paceman Marco Jansen during the 12th over of the innings.

Virat Kohli pardoned by Mulder off Jansen

Virat Kohli, after belting Marco Jansen for two confident boundaries to launch his innings on the third afternoon, instantly received a huge reprieve from South Africa’s substitute fielder Wiaan Mulder.

Kohli, who was looking to work the ball past square leg, had nicked one towards Mulder stationed at first slip. The Proteas fielder, however, made a mess of the opportunity as the ball deflected him to race near the boundary line.

The Indian batter snuck two runs off the dropped catch, thus accumulating 10 runs from the opening Marco Jansen over.

Marco Jansen made amends off the missed opportunity a while later by cleaning up Shubman Gill within his opening spell of the innings. The lanky speedster hurled down a full delivery angling into the stumps, leaving Gill bewildered after scoring 26.

His dismissal paved way for India’s number five Shreyas Iyer to join Virat Kohli at the crease, as the two aim to wipe off their team’s huge first innings deficit of 163 runs.

By the time of Tea, both cricketers walked off the field undefeated to take India to 62-3, still finding themselves 101 runs away from the Proteas.
