Australian opening batter David Warner is likely to be unavailable for selection in Australia’s upcoming white-ball series against West Indies in February. The veteran cricketer has signed to play for Dubai Capitals in ILT20 2024.

As Warner is set to say goodbye to Test cricket at the end of the ongoing Test series against Pakistan, he will be busy with various franchise league assignments following his Test retirement in Sydney next week.

Firstly, the 37-year-old is expected to take part in the ongoing BBL13 for Sydney Thunder before flying to the UAE to play for Dubai Capitals in the second edition of International League T20 (ILT20 2024) which is scheduled to take place from January 20 to February 18.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Australia will be hosting the West Indies for a multi-format tour, starting with a two-match Test series in Adelaide and Brisbane from January 17th. Moreover, the three ODIs and three T20Is will take place between February 2 and 13 which will very much clash with the ILT20 schedule.

Even though Warner took a call on his Test career for Australia, the dynamic opener is still a match-winning asset in ODI and T20I for the kangaroos. However, it's no longer shocking that there will be many players, including the likes of Warner, who will opt out of national duties to take part in franchise league cricket around the world in the coming days.

It's nothing but the new landscape of modern-day cricket where individual players will have their priorities to get the maximum monetary returns. Warner, at this stage of his career, is no different as he will look to get the best out of his remaining playing days, and while doing so, he might well have to skip national duties for short-term T20 contracts.

However, according to reports, Australian selectors already have a plan not to select Warner and other senior Aussies for the white-ball series against West Indies. They are rather expected to be included for the T20Is against New Zealand which is going to take place from February 21 in Wellington.

Keeping an eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA, the 2021 champions would like to have the likes of Warner early in the preparations for the mega event. Meanwhile, the ODIs against the West Indies will mark the beginning of a new four-year process towards building a side for the next 50-over World Cup in 2027.
