Sometimes, things just don’t go your way. For India’s batting maestro, Virat Kohli, the spinning pitch in Pune didn’t work in his favor, and a careless shot led to his early dismissal during the second Test match against New Zealand at the MCA Stadium, Pune.
On Day 2, after Shubman Gill departed for 30 runs, all eyes were on Kohli, with hopes he would make an impact. It was the 24th over of India's first innings when Mitchell Santner, already pumped up after removing Gill, took the ball again. In the fourth delivery of the over, Kohli made a mistake that cost him dearly.
Mitchell Santner tossed up a low full toss around the leg stump. Kohli planted his front leg and tried to play across the line into the leg side but missed the shot completely. The ball crashed into the base of the middle stump. It was a poor stroke from Kohli, and he paid the price. Indian fans were left in disbelief as Kohli walked back to the pavilion, dismissed for just 1 run off 9 balls.
Mitchell Santner Shines On Day 2
Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) and Shubman Gill (10*) had done well to stay unbeaten until stumps on Day 1, but Day 2 was all about Santner. He started the day with a bang, dismissing Gill for 30 runs off 72 balls. Santner bowled a flighted delivery that straightened after pitching. Gill was forward to defend, but the ball beat his inside edge and hit him on the pad. The umpire quickly raised his finger, and Gill, knowing it was too straight, didn’t bother reviewing the decision.
At the time of writing, India are at 70 for 4 in 26 overs.
