Gujarat Giants opener Veda Krishnamurthy failed to trouble the score-keepers as she was trapped in front of stumps for a two-ball duck by senior Mumbai Indians fast bowler Shabnim Ismail.

Ismail struck in her opening over of the match after her skipper Harmanpreet Kaur had won the toss and opted to field first.

Opening the innings for Gujarat Giants in their first match of the ongoing WPL 2024 season, Indian T20 veteran Veda Krishnamurthy failed to read Mumbai Indians’ new-ball speedster Shabnim Ismail in just the second ball of her innings.

Krishnamurthy played down the wrong line by failing to account for Ismail’s inward movement before she was caught plumbed in front of stumps. The on-field umpire upheld the fast bowler’s appeal as Gujarat Giants lost their first wicket inside the opening over with just three runs on the board.

After Veda Krishnamurthy’s early dismissal, number three Harleen Deol and middle-order batters Phoebe Litchfield and Dayalan Hemalatha also failed to make any impact in the powerplay as the Giants slumped to 43-3 by the end of their first six overs.

Harleen herself was deceived by Shabnim Ismail in the third over of the innings, as the South African speedster finished her opening three-over spell with figures of 2-16.

Amidst tumbling wickets, Krishnamurthy’s opening partner and captain Beth Mooney responded with belligerent boundaries from her end to take her side past the 50-run mark.
