Royal Challengers Bangalore recently locked horns with UP Warriorz in the second match of the second season of the Women’s Premier League 2024 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on 24th February. 

The Indian bowler Asha Sobhana quickly became the talk of the town after the game as she picked her first five-wicket haul in the tournament.

Being considered as an underdog and not having received the desired recognition, Asha continued to shine Throughout the first game for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL 2024. RCB registered a 2-run win over UP Warriors in the first match as they defended their high total of 157 runs.

Asha Sobhana picked her first wicket of the match as she dismissed the UP opening batter Vrinda Dinesh at a score of 18 which was followed by another wicket in the same over. Asha bowled the Australian all-rounder Tahlia McGrath at a score of 22, after she smashed a six in her previous over.

As the UP Warriorz took a dominating lead in the game, Asha Sobhana’s last and 17th over of the match changed the phase of the game. Asha Sobhana took 3 back-to-back wickets in the same over as she picked her first five-wicket haul

She dismissed Grace Harris, Shweta Sehrawat and the new batter on the crease Kiran Navgire at 38,31 and a single respectively in the 17th over.

Asha Sobhana also became the first Indian to pick five wickets in a match in the history of WPL. After the match, Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana took a short interview with the Player of the Match, Asha Sobhana and questioned her about her journey in domestic cricket for 10 long years.

While replying to Mandhana’s question, Asha discussed that she was completely blank and did not have any expectations, as she just wanted to play cricket. 

She admitted that not receiving recognition for her skills in the game definitely made her sad but she never gave up on her dreams to enjoy that one day which will be hers in the game.

Asha Sobhana was evidently in tears as she got her first player of the match award in the post-match ceremony as RCB won the first match of the second season of WPL.
