In a dramatic turn of events, Afghanistan veteran Gulbadin Naib lost his precious wicket to Rishad Hossain, courtesy of a brilliant diving catch by Soumya Sarkar. Naib’s wicket led to an unwarranted collapse for the Afghans at a pivotal stage of the first innings.

To secure their semi-final spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan went out to bat first against Bangladesh at St.Vincent.

The wicket was tough to bat on as AFG were off to a steady start. The opening pair’s 59-run partnership was broken in the 11th over, and Azmatullah’s wicket in the 16th over triggered a massive collapse.

Gurbaz’s resilience ended with Rishad Hossain’s change of ends tactic. Moreover, Gulbadin Naib, the previous match’s hero for Afghanistan, failed to make an impact in the do-or-die game.

Hossain lured Gulbadin with a tossed-up delivery outside off-stump. The batter went after it for a slog sweep, but only managed to get a leading edge.

With the ball dipping at mid-wicket, Soumya Sarkar came all the way, sprinting from deep to pluck a sensational diving catch.

With that, Afghanistan lost three wickets in the span of five runs and were reduced to 89/4 with just three overs in hand.

Eventually, Afghanistan could only get 115 runs total on the board, which looked way below par.

Moreover, a brief rain delay could further spoil AFG’s party. Notably, if Rashid Khan and his boys lose this game, Australia will go through to the semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh stands a chance as well. They must wrap up this chase inside 12.1 overs to go through the semi-finals with just 1 win in 3 games.
